Playing Audible.com books on the NLS digital book player

I can't seem to get this to work.
I created the folder "audio+podcasts" and I can get podcasts to play but none of the Audible books come up. I did call Audible (ha, that was a joke-the guy had absolutely no clue what I was talking about) so that was no help.
Have any of you done this and what am I missing?
Thank you.

I think you have to convert the books into MP3 first, but I'm not sure.

Oh, shoot, as in illegally converting?
Someone from NLS said they could be played and now that you mention this, I do recall it.
Darn.

There may be a way to play them without converting them, but I'm not exactly sure. I know if you convert them, you'll definitely get them to play.

Connect your device to your computer. On your computer, load Audible Manager. Audible Manager should detect the device. If it doesn't, go into the Devices menu. You should be able to add the device from there.

If you can add the device, transfer books threw Audible Manager by pressing control+t on the title you want to transfer.

Then, close Audible Manager and disconnect your device from your computer. Restart your device and try playing the audio.

Some devices will only play certain Audible formats. You can change the format of Audible books within your library on the Audible website. There is a dropdown which says "select your preferred format". For my device, the preferred format is format 4.
